Two
Words and music by Tom May

originally written as a poem in 1996; music put to it in Eatonville, WA in 1999

Verse 1
Two friends I have known in my life
One shares a French glass of wine
the other drinks with me through good times and bad
Til’ the hourglass of evening is blind

Two songs I have sung in my time
One is melodic and pure
The other is rough edged with the dust of the blues
To temper the tough times we endure

Chorus
To both of them I am grateful, so different, but so much the same
(When the time for decisions, has all come and gone- I’m the one who will shoulder the blame)
My debt to you both is unchanged

Verse 2
Two roads I have taken again
Both lead me straight to the west
Past the Cascading waters and mountains alone
where the weary heart can find rest

Two kinds of jobs I have had in my life
One required muscle and sweat
The other has taken my hands and my heart
far from a home, that I’ve never found yet

Chorus
To both of them I am grateful, so different, but so much the same
(When the time for decisions, has all come and gone- I’m the one who will shoulder the blame)
My debt to you both is unchanged

Verse 3
Two kinds of women I have known in my life
One she is steady and true
The other she makes love with her earrings still on
Like the tinkers and the gypsies will do

Tonight I am lonesome for all of those friends
The women wine and roads that I knew
Not for fortune or fame did I follow this trail
But to find my way back here to you

Chorus
To both of them I am grateful, so different, but so much the same
(When the time for decisions, has all come and gone- I’m the one who will shoulder the blame)
My debt to you both is unchanged

To both of them I am grateful, so different, but so much the same
(late in the evening when the lights are getting dim, I hope you’ll remember my name)
My debt to you both is unchanged
