Its Own Reward
Words and music by Tom May

Written at my pal, Avery Grimes, house-in Denver Colorado

Verse 1
In the firefly glow of summertime, the berry wine flows free
Memories of old friends and foes have overtaken me
In the garden of our days gone by, their laughter fills the yard
Pour another glass of restlessness, tonight is its own reward

So don’t look too far down the road, forget what is round the bend
They’ll be plenty of time to caress or curse your fortune at journey’s end
See the sky so blue, the geese in flight, the sunset that beckons you forward
Fame is for the faint of heart, the road is own reward

Chorus
The farmer and the fisherman, are both a part of us
Sometimes we’re blessed by a mighty catch, sometimes the crops go bust
But give me a good wind from the north, to simply fill my sails
Or a pasture green at daybreak, as the night begins to pale.

Verse 2
Don’t think about the ladies lost, forget about the past
The evenings spent in loneliness, surely cannot last
at the beach house there’s a rose in bloom, bright red in a winter storm
reach out through the wilderness, romance is its own reward

Give me one more day to wander free, to sing another song
To marvel again at nature’s kiss, and wonder what’s gone wrong
To fall in love, to make mistakes, to travel far with words
To wish for nothing more but now, tonight is its own reward

Chorus
The farmer and the fisherman, are both a part of us
Sometimes we’re blessed by a mighty catch, sometimes the crops go bust
But give me a good wind from the north, to simply fill my sails
Or a pasture green at daybreak, as the night begins to pale.

Verse 3 In the firefly glow of summertime, the berry wine flows free
Memories of old friends and foes have overtaken me
In the garden of our days gone by, their laughter fills the yard
The flowers bloom in grand display, tonight is its own reward

Pour another glass of restlessness, tonight is its own reward
